the seawall. two flight attendants were ejected from the back as the plane broke apart. it was the pilot's first time coming into san francisco at the controls of a boeing 777. all three pilots on board answered questions on tuesday. officials wanted to know why the plane was flying 40 miles per hour slower than normal when it approached the runway and why the crew didn't notice until it was too late. two teenage girls, best friends, were killed. they had been on their way to summer camp. >> now, incredibly, 305 of the 307 people on board survived. some escaped just moments before the plane burst into flames. one passenger helped people to safety amid the panic. anna warner has his story for wjz. >> reporter: some of those aboard asiana flight 214 recall a stunned silence when the plane came to rest at the side of runway 28 left. >> with no warning, during the whole crash and even after the crash, no communication from the pilot or the crew over the

radio, right. >> so nobody came on with any announcement? >> nothing. we were left to ourselves to figure it out. >> reporter: ben lovey was sitting next to an emergency window exit. he thought his ribs might be broken, but he acted quickly opening the door. >> i just started saying we're going to be okay. we need to get out of here quick. leave everything behind. help each other. get out, get out, get out. >> reporter: some crew members are also credited with quick action. this flight attendant was photographed carrying out a passenger on her back. >> i remember one flight attendance that was doing an extremely good job and she grabbed me and said you've got to exit through straight ahead. i actually exited through a completely different door than i was sitting next to. >> did you know that the plane was on fire and that there was jet fuel leaking all around? >> absolutely not. i think i'm truly, truly miracle that i'm here then. >> you don't want people calling you a hero? >> no. absolutely not. the reason is it's not one

continues to grip the city this summer. gunshot after gunshot send neighbors on north carrollton avenue ducking for cover. >> i pray for the people got shot. >> reporter: four men hit by thebullets. he ran to the scene where he found his brother and cousin shot. >> it's going to hurt a lot of people. it's hurting a lot of people, because these guys could have died today. >> reporter: frustrated neighbors calling for more help from police. >> i don't know what they need to do, but they need to do something to make it safe for all of us. >> reporter: police say they're fed up, too. >> it's extremely frustrating, it is. you know, we're actively encouraging the community to assist us in moving forward in these cases. >> reporter: the violent streak stretching across the city. around 2:30 in the morning, a gunman opened fire here in the 1800 block of east landville killing one man and injury another. two miles away, neighbors in bel air edison marched together to try to activate their own

community. >> we can stand together and unify, we can let them know that won't be tolerated. >> reporter: this man just wants to make it out of the city. >> murder land, if i'm not mistaken, that's the name for baltimore. this is where everybody is getting killed in baltimore. >> reporter: so he can have a brighter future without bullets. and nearly 50 people have been shot in baltimore since the summer began. live at city police headquarters, meghan mccorkell, wjz eyewitness news. >> the police commissioner announced a series of leadership changes in the department that he says will help police be more efficient and accountable. two people in the hospital tonight after a serious crash in howard county. sky eye chopper 13 is over the scene in fulton this evening. two cars were involved in the crash. the medevac was called in to fly two people to shock trauma. no word on the extent of their injuries. they lived through horrors most people cannot imagine. now, the three women held

captive for years in an ohio home speak out. lynn buoy shows us their incredible recovery from torture and abuse. >> i want to thank everyone who has helped me and my fam/?txuthank you for your support. >> thank you, everyone, for your love, support and donations. >> reporter: amanda barry, michelle night and gina dejesus appear healthy and smiling as they speak to the public. the last time we heard barry's voice was two months ago when she called 9112 after escaping from a nightmare. >> i've been kidnapped and missing for ten years. and i'm here. i'm free now. >> reporter: the women endured a decade of torture trapped inside an ohio house, they say at the hands of ariel castro. he's accused of tying them up with chains and ropes and repeatedly beating and sexual assaulting them. charges against him include kidnapping and rape. he has pleaded not guilty.

castro allegedly fathered one girl's matter. michelle night's was held the longest. her injuries so severe she needed facial reconstruction. >> i may have been through hell and back but i am strong enough to walk through hell with a smile on my face. >> a psychologist says they need intensive therapy this they missed out on major developmental milestones and suffered ptsd so they have a lot of catching up to do. >> reporter: the women never mentioned their accused attacker in the video. they focus on the future, not the past. >> thank you for all your prayers. i'm looking forward to my brand- new life. thank you. >> reporter: the cleveland courage fund was set up to help these women start new lives. as of july 2nd, organizers say more than $1 million has been donated. lynn buoy, wjz eyewitness news. last week a judge ruled castro is competent to stand trial. his next court appearance is

scheduled july 24th. the aclu is suing to overturn same-sex marriage bans in pennsylvania and virginia. if they win, that could pave the way for a nationwide decision on the issue. the lawsuit would force those states to offer legal protection to gay couples. the aclu expects the cases to end up in the supreme court which may be forced to decide if it is unconstitutional to deny same-sex marriage rights. same-sex marriage will soon be legal in 13 states, including maryland. momentum is building for the baltimore orioles. it's just over halfway through their winning season. fans are glued to their seats. the team says attendance is way up at camden yards and thebusinesses around the park are feeling the magic, too. kai jackson has the impact of the birds' popularity. >> reporter: the orioles are having another good season and that means big business for baltimore and maryland. it's a sea of orange and black at oriole park and camden yards. the birds are flying high with

another solid season and fans are excited. >> offense is beyond anything i thought it would be. i hope the pitching picks it up a little bit. we'll see. >> reporter: the orioles front offices, what's really picked up is fan attendance. consistent play by the team and last year's playoff run has more marylanders at the ballpark. they were 26 out of the 30 major league teams for attendance. this year they jumped out to 18th out of 30. it's the third biggest attendance increase. >> also walking around town you see more people in orioles gear, and there's more interest on social media, twitter, facebook. >> reporter: fans are buying food, merchandise and other concessions at the ballpark. around town, area bars, restaurants and other businesses are packed on game day. and having four orioles in the upcoming all-star game also helps. >> it's great. we just beat the yankees. we lost last night. >> reporter: hotels are often booked or near filled when the

it is partly cloudy, 78 degrees in central maryland right now. the complete first warning forecast is coming up. in toronto a month's worth of rainfalls in just a few hours.

that left streets flooded and cars underwater. it also left this commuter train stranded on submerged tracks. 1,400 people were on board. it took nearly 700 hours to rescue them. officials say at the height of the storm, more than 300,000 homes were left without power. shocking video from a gas station in tennessee. a man suffers severe burns after a car crashes into a gas pump. watch as the vehicle approaches from the upper part of the screen. a fireball erupts and engulfs a man walking next to the pump. now, he's in critical but stable condition. police say the driver told them he blacked out. they say drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor. a man linked to the murder case against former new england patriots aaron hernandez says the football player fired the fatal shots. court documents reveal carlos ortiz told police hernandez admitted to a third party that he shot lloyd. lloyd's body was discovered a

mile from hernandez's home. other court documents show hernandez was argumentative with police. officers say he slammed the door on them when they first went to interview him about the murder. hernandez pleaded not guilty. attorneys for george zimmerman are hoping testimony from a forensic expert will convince jurors that zimmerman shot trayvon martin in self- defense. the expert testified that begun powder guns -- gunpowder burns showed trayvon martin was on top of zimmerman when he was killed. he admitted martin could have been trying to pull away. the defense is likely to wrap up its case tomorrow. the 19 firefighters who lost their lives battling an arizona wildfire were remembered today at a memorial service in their hometown. >> eric shane marsh. mountain hotshots. vice-president joe biden was there. private funerals for the firefighters are scheduled in the coming days. a dog owner who's arrested for leaving her two pets in a sweltering car last month has died. as derek valcourt explains, her family says it's all because police took her to central booking instead of an emergency room where she needed to be. >> reporter: 62-year-old sharon loved her two poodles, missy and bear, which is why news that she left her beloved pets in a car on a scorching hot day was so shocking to her family, including her 92-year-old mother. >> i knew she would have went back out. she never left her dogs like that. >> reporter: but after leaving her mother's house, sharon became so ill she checked into this no dog's allowed hotel and passed out before she could tend to her pets. employees at this hotel found the dogs in the car. one of them already dead, and police arrested sharon.

in central booking she was placed in the medical unit where a public defender snapped this picture. >> clearly the photos show this woman was not in the condition to be in jail. >> reporter: her family attorney says shortly after her release from jail, sharon lapsed into a coma and died. with her death certificate in hand, her family went to court tuesday morning to have animal cruelty charges dismissed. as attorneys explained her death, the judge apparently unaware her family was in the courtroom quipped, well, that's one way to avoid prosecution. >> i couldn't believe that this happened. >> reporter: now her grieving family and their attorney say they're considering legal action. >> had she been given the appropriate medical care and taken to a regular hospital that she would be alive today. >> reporter: the family attorney says in addition to filing possible lawsuits against police and central booking, they're also considering filing civil rights violations for failure to provide adequate medical treatment while she was here at central booking. derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. the department of corrections declined to comment

for this story. rambling rusty has come out of hiding at the national zoo. the red panda made his first public appearance after his brazen escape last month. he was eventually located in adams morgan. you may remember. zoo keeper personnel keeping an eye on rusty in case he decides to check out any other neighborhoods. they si he's doing fine and hopes he sticks around long enough to mate in the next few months. >> they cut out of the video what happened when he approached his female friend. she was upset and swatted him in the face just as soon as he came. >> seriously? >> yeah. >> well, he tried to get away from her. don't play around with a female panda. >> does very a girlfriend? do we know? >> yes. >> oh, very good. probably just outside checking some weather action. let's check out the conditions around the region. right now we have clouds still. kind of a warm night. dew point's up a little bit. humidity is not a stick of wind

at all. no wind at all. the barometer holding steady. currently only 64 in oakland and shower activity just to the west of garrett county right now. 82 in d.c. light rain this evening. 78 here and 77 up in elkton. locally temperatures still in the upper 70s. it is a warm night even though it wasn't all that warm. this afternoon it only got to 83 believe it or not. a few showers south of the plato and potomac river moving to the southeast. a batch of rain offshore from ocean city moving away from the area. we did have pretty good showers and thunderstorm activity from salisbury to about chrisfield, south of cam bridge and extreme southern portion of st. mary's county earlier this evening. right now no wind here at all. southerlily winds generally around the region. it will keep this warm air mass another day or two. strong storms and hail across the upper plains. most heading off across the

great lakes, even into ontario again. a batch in ohio beginning to break down. some of the clouds we'll see here tonight and tomorrow. maybe a few showers. it's possible a thundershower could survive the trip over the mountains. basically expect this to redevelop into some thunder showers tomorrow afternoon with thunderstorms as remain in the warm humid air until thursday, the front comes through with another chance of storms and then we begin to dry out. temperatures go down a little bit quickly in the tropics. chantal has weakened a little bit. the pressure's come up as well. continuing to head off to the west/northwest. most of the models have it east of florida, making a quick turn around. savannah and heading across georgia. see that? one of them has it in the gulf but that's an outer. most of them have it kind of clustered right through here heading into the south. so it looks like there's going to be a big rainstorm for portions of the southeast by the end of the weekend and next week. south wind in the bay, 10-15. bay temp around 81.

there's tomorrow. so be positive and come back tomorrow. >> now, brittan and goss man were sent to the minor leagues after tonight's game. one of the roster spots will be taken by chen who's been out with a strained rib cage muscle. he returns tomorrow night. while the o's have cooled off little a bit the tampa rays are hot. they beat the minnesota twins in florida tonight. kelly johnson driving in two runs with a double to the gap. a 4-1 tampa bay win. they've won ten of their last 11 games. they're now just three games behind first place boston, two games ahead of the o's. finally a positive follow- up to one of the more gruesome injuries we've ever seen. basketball player kevin ware suffered that shocking come pawned leg fracture during the final four in april. down but not out. he had surgery and has been undergoing rehab. today his coach said he could be back on the court when practice starts in october.
